    Arrive Istanbul

    Friday, April 3

    Arrive Istanbul

You land in a city that has been the capital of three empires. The transfer is waiting, the hotel overlooks the Bosphorus, and the only agenda tonight is arriving well. A gentle evening walk through Sultanahmet — the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia lit up against the night sky — is the perfect first taste. No museums, no queues, just the feeling of a city that’s been here for 2,500 years and isn’t going anywhere.

    Evening

Arrive Istanbul Airport (IST). Private transfer to Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus.

    ~7:00 PM

Check in. Settle into your family suite. Bosphorus views from the room.

    8:00–9:00 PM

Gentle walk through Sultanahmet: Hippodrome, Blue Mosque exterior lit up in blue, Hagia Sophia glowing gold. No interiors tonight — just atmosphere.

    9:00 PM

Dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Blue Mosque. Turkish mezze spread: hummus, pide, grilled halloumi, lamb kebabs. Let the kids try ayran (yogurt drink) and fresh-squeezed pomegranate juice.

Istanbul traffic can be intense, especially from the new airport. Allow 60–90 minutes for the IST → Sultanahmet transfer depending on time of day.

    02

Old City — Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı & Bazaars

    Saturday, April 4

Today is the big one — Istanbul’s greatest hits in a single, well-paced day. Your private guide and van handle all the logistics so you can focus on the experience. Start early at Hagia Sophia before the crowds build, then the Blue Mosque between prayer times, Topkapı Palace (the Harem is optional — adults love it, kids sometimes fade), and the Basilica Cistern, which is genuinely magical for children. The afternoon belongs to the bazaars: Grand Bazaar first, then Spice Bazaar. Turn it into a scavenger hunt — find the most beautiful lamp, the strangest spice, the best Turkish delight sample.

    9:00–10:15 AM

Hagia Sophia — 1,500 years of history under one dome. Byzantine mosaics, Ottoman calligraphy, the sheer scale of it. Foreign visitor ticketing applies; kids under 8 free with passport/ID.

    10:30–11:15 AM

Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) — plan around prayer times. Headscarves needed. The six minarets and 20,000 blue İznik tiles are unforgettable.

    11:30 AM–1:30 PM

Topkapı Palace — the nerve center of the Ottoman Empire. Treasury, courtyards, Bosphorus views from the terrace. The Harem section is fascinating for adults but optional with kids (add ~45 min).

    1:30–2:00 PM

Lunch near Sultanahmet — your guide knows the spots that aren’t tourist traps.

    2:00–3:00 PM

Basilica Cistern — underground columns, moody lighting, fish in the water, the upside-down Medusa heads. Kids love this one.

    3:30–5:00 PM

Grand Bazaar — 4,000+ shops under vaulted ceilings. Lamps, ceramics, leather, jewelry. Haggling is part of the fun. Accept the tea they offer.

    5:00–6:00 PM

Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar) — saffron, Turkish delight, dried fruits, teas. Easier to navigate than the Grand Bazaar and more sensory. The "smell test" game with kids: guess the spice blindfolded.

    Evening

Optional: Turkish hammam — a family-friendly, tourist-comfortable bath house. The warm stone, the scrub, the foam massage. It’s an experience, not just a spa.

Museum Pass Istanbul covers Topkapı and several other sites but not Hagia Sophia (separate ticket). Your guide will handle logistics, but it’s good to know.

    03

Bosphorus Cruise, Dolmabahçe & Galata Sunset

    Sunday, April 5

A completely different Istanbul today. The morning belongs to the water — a Bosphorus cruise between two continents, Ottoman waterfront mansions sliding past, container ships and fishing boats sharing the strait. Then Dolmabahçe Palace, the most extravagant palace you’ll ever see (the staircase alone has 14 tonnes of gold). The afternoon shifts to modern Istanbul: Karaköy’s street art and coffee scene, Galata Tower for panoramic views, and Istiklal Avenue’s energy. End the day on Galata Bridge at sunset, watching fishermen cast lines while the minarets glow pink behind them.

    10:00 AM–12:00 PM

Bosphorus cruise — sail between Europe and Asia. Pass Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, Rumeli Fortress, and the Ottoman yalıs (waterfront mansions). Şehir Hatları operates the official city ferry tours.

    12:00–1:00 PM

    Lunch along the Bosphorus waterfront.

    1:30–3:30 PM

Dolmabahçe Palace — the last Ottoman sultan’s residence. Crystal staircase, 4.5-tonne chandelier, 285 rooms of jaw-dropping excess. Keep pace brisk for kids — the gardens are a good break.

    4:00–5:00 PM

Explore Karaköy → Galata — street art, third-wave coffee shops, design boutiques. Galata Tower area for photos and 360° views of the city.

    5:00–6:30 PM

Istiklal Avenue — Istanbul’s busiest pedestrian street. Historic tram, bookshops, roasted chestnuts, ice cream vendors who play tricks with the cone. Kids love the show.

    Sunset

Galata Bridge at golden hour. Fishermen on the upper deck, restaurants on the lower deck, and the skyline of Sultanahmet turning pink and gold across the water. One of the great free shows in travel.

    8:00 PM

Farewell Istanbul dinner. Meze, fresh fish, raki if you’re feeling brave. Tomorrow you fly to another planet.

The Bosphorus cruise schedule is seasonal — your guide will confirm the best departure. For Dolmabahçe, the Harem section is a separate ticket and adds 30–45 min. Worth it for the crystal and gold interiors.

    04

Fly to Cappadocia → Fairy Chimneys

    Monday, April 6

Fly to Cappadocia → Fairy Chimneys

The morning flight drops you into a landscape that doesn’t look like Earth. Fairy chimneys, cave churches carved into volcanic rock, valleys layered in pink and gold. After checking into a genuine cave hotel — yes, your room is carved from stone — the afternoon is an easy introduction: Göreme Open-Air Museum (a UNESCO World Heritage site of rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes), then Paşabağ’s surreal mushroom-shaped chimneys, and a sunset viewpoint where the valleys turn amber. Light day by design — save the energy for tomorrow’s 4:30 AM wake-up call.

    11:00 AM

Flight: Istanbul (IST) → Kayseri (ASR). 1.5-hour flight.

    ~12:30 PM

Arrive Kayseri. Private transfer to Göreme (~1 hour drive through the Cappadocian plateau).

    ~1:30 PM

Check in at Tekkaya Cave Hotel. Lunch at the hotel or a nearby Göreme restaurant. Cave rooms are a thrill for kids — let them explore.

    2:00–3:30 PM

Göreme Open-Air Museum — rock-cut churches with vivid Byzantine frescoes dating to the 10th–13th centuries. The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) is the highlight. Separate ticket for the Dark Church, worth it.

    4:00–5:30 PM

Paşabağ (Monks Valley) — the most photogenic fairy chimneys in Cappadocia. Mushroom-shaped rock formations with hermit monk cells carved into the caps. Easy walking, great for kids.

    Sunset

Sunset viewpoint — Rose Valley or Red Valley, depending on conditions. The volcanic landscape turns from gold to pink to amber. Bring a warm layer; desert evenings cool fast.

    7:30 PM

Dinner at a cave restaurant in Göreme. Testi kebab (pottery kebab, broken open at the table) is the local signature — theatrical and delicious. Early night: balloon launch is at 4:30 AM.

April in Cappadocia can be cool, especially mornings (5–10°C). Layer up for the balloon ride and sunset viewpoints. Midday is comfortable (15–20°C).

    05

Balloon Flight → Underground City → Pottery → Sunset

    Tuesday, April 7

This is the day you’ll talk about for years. The alarm goes off at 4:30 AM, and by the time the sun clears the ridgeline you’re floating 300 meters above a landscape of fairy chimneys, with dozens of other balloons drifting through valleys painted in morning light. It’s one of the great travel experiences on Earth — and kids are wide-eyed the entire flight. After a late breakfast and reset, the afternoon takes you underground: Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu, ancient cities carved 8 stories deep into the rock. Then a hands-on pottery workshop in Avanos (kids get to throw clay on a wheel), and a sunset walk to close out Cappadocia.

    4:30–5:00 AM

Pickup from hotel. Drive to balloon launch field. Pre-flight briefing, watch the inflation.

    ~5:30–7:00 AM

Hot air balloon flight — 60–75 minutes above the fairy chimneys, valleys, and rock formations. Sunrise over Cappadocia. The pilot navigates into valleys and between rock spires. Champagne toast on landing. Weather-dependent — if grounded today, backup slot reserved for tomorrow.

    8:00–10:00 AM

Late breakfast at the hotel. Rest, recharge. The early wake-up earns this.

    10:30 AM

Private guide and car pickup for full-day Cappadocia tour.

    11:00 AM–12:30 PM

Underground city (Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu) — ancient subterranean city up to 8 floors deep, carved as refuge from invaders. Ventilation shafts, rolling stone doors, stables, churches. Tight spaces in places — kids find it thrilling, adults find it humbling.

    12:30–1:30 PM

    Lunch at a local restaurant.

    2:00–3:30 PM

Valley walk — Love Valley viewpoints and an easy trail section. Dramatic rock formations and open sky.

    4:00–5:30 PM

Avanos pottery workshop — hands-on demonstration with a local master potter. Each person throws a piece on the wheel. The red clay from the Kızılırmak river has been used here for 4,000 years. Kids love this.

    Sunset

Final Cappadocia sunset from a viewpoint. Tomorrow is an early flight — pack tonight.

    7:30 PM

Farewell Cappadocia dinner. Optional: Whirling Dervish show (Sema ceremony) — cultural, meditative, unique. Not a performance but a spiritual practice. Worth it if the family has energy.

Balloon rides have a minimum age (commonly ~6 years). Confirm with the operator when booking. Dress warmly — it’s cold at altitude before sunrise, even in April.

    Kuşadası & Ephesus

2 Nights  ·  Liberty Hotels Kusadasi

    Kuşadası & Ephesus

    06

Fly to Aegean Coast → Resort Day

    Wednesday, April 8

After five days of history, bazaars, and balloon flights, the Aegean coast is the exhale. The morning flight brings you to Izmir, and the transfer drops you at an all-inclusive resort on the Kuşadası coastline. The agenda for the rest of the day is no agenda at all: pool, spa, beach, nap, a promenade stroll at sunset. Tomorrow is Ephesus — one of the greatest ancient cities on Earth — so today is about arriving rested and ready.

    ~6:30 AM

Early checkout from Tekkaya Cave Hotel. Private transfer to Kayseri Airport.

    8:25 AM

Flight: Kayseri (ASR) → Izmir (ADB). 1.5-hour flight.

    ~10:00 AM

Arrive Izmir. Private transfer to Kuşadası (~1 hour drive south along the Aegean coast).

    ~11:00 AM

Check in at Liberty Hotels Kusadasi. All-inclusive — everything from here is covered.

    Afternoon

Pool, spa, beach, rest. No schedule, no transfers, no guides. Just a family afternoon by the Aegean. Kids in the pool, adults with a book and a Turkish coffee.

    Sunset

Promenade walk along the Kuşadası waterfront. Ice cream, sea breeze, fishing boats.

    Evening

Dinner at the resort. Easy, buffet-style, every cuisine. Kids eat when they’re hungry, adults eat when they’re ready.

Kuşadası in early April is warm but not hot (18–22°C). The sea might be cool for swimming but the pools are heated. Pack light layers for evening seaside walks.

    07

Ephesus — One of the Great Ancient Cities

    Thursday, April 9

Ephesus is the kind of place where you round a corner and stop breathing. The Library of Celsus — two stories of restored marble columns and carved reliefs — is one of the most photographed facades in archaeology. But it’s the Terrace Houses that steal the show: Roman luxury apartments with intact mosaic floors, frescoed walls, and underfloor heating from 2,000 years ago. With a private guide, kids engage completely — the guide turns it into stories about gladiators, ancient plumbing, and what teenagers did for fun in the Roman Empire. The afternoon adds context: the Ephesus Museum and a quick stop at the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, now a single column and a lot of imagination).

    8:30 AM

    Breakfast at the resort.

    9:00 AM

Private guide and car pickup. Drive to Ephesus (~20 min from Kuşadası).

    9:30 AM–12:30 PM

Ephesus — guided tour of the ancient city. Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre (25,000 seats), Curetes Street, the Fountain of Trajan, public latrines (kids find the communal ancient toilets hilarious). Don’t skip the Terrace Houses — separate ticket, but the mosaics and frescoed rooms are the real interior treasures.

    12:30–1:30 PM

Lunch in Selçuk — a small, charming town at the gates of Ephesus.

    2:00–3:00 PM

Ephesus Museum (Selçuk) — beautifully curated artifacts from the excavations. The Artemis statues and gladiator room are standouts.

    3:15–3:45 PM

Temple of Artemis — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only a single reconstructed column remains. Quick stop, but the significance is worth the visit.

    4:00–5:00 PM

Optional: Şirince village — a hillside Greek village with stone houses, fruit wine shops, and olive oil tastings. Snacky, charming, easy. Or return to the resort for pool time.

    Evening

Final resort dinner. Pack for tomorrow’s morning flight back to Istanbul.

Ephesus gets hot and exposed by midday. Starting at 9:30 AM with a guide means you cover the highlights in the comfortable morning hours. Bring water, sunscreen, and hats. The Terrace Houses are worth the extra ticket — they’re the indoor equivalent of Pompeii.

Return to Istanbul → Taksim & Last Shopping

    Friday, April 10

Back in Istanbul, but a different neighborhood this time. Taksim puts you in the heart of modern Istanbul — close to Istiklal Avenue, the Galata district, and some of the city’s best shopping. The afternoon is unstructured: souvenirs, a final Istiklal stroll, maybe a Turkish mosaic lamp workshop if the family wants one last hands-on experience. This is the unhurried goodbye — a kebab lunch, a final Turkish tea, the last baklava.

    ~8:00 AM

Check out Liberty Hotels. Private transfer to Izmir Airport.

    10:40 AM

Flight: Izmir (ADB) → Istanbul (IST). 1.5-hour flight.

    ~12:00 PM

Arrive Istanbul. Private transfer to InterContinental Istanbul, Taksim.

    ~1:00 PM

Check in. Lunch near Taksim — kebab, pide, or a casual Turkish spread.

    Afternoon

Istiklal Avenue stroll + last-minute souvenir shopping. Turkish delight gift boxes, hand-painted ceramics, evil eye (nazar) jewelry, spices. Optional: Turkish mosaic lamp workshop (hands-on, 1–2 hours — you build and keep a lamp).

    Evening

Farewell dinner in Istanbul. A rooftop restaurant with city views — meze, fresh fish from the Bosphorus, Turkish wine. The minarets are lit, the call to prayer echoes, and nine days of Turkey settles into memory.

For souvenirs: Turkish delight from a specialty shop (not the tourist boxes), hand-painted İznik ceramics, natural olive oil soap, and saffron from the Spice Bazaar are all excellent. The mosaic lamp workshops are a unique, memorable family activity.

    09

    Departure

    Saturday, April 11

Last morning in Turkey. If there’s time before the airport transfer, a final Turkish breakfast at the hotel — the full spread with cheeses, olives, tomatoes, eggs, simit, honey, and tea. Nine days, three regions, one unforgettable country.

    8:00–9:30 AM

Turkish breakfast at the hotel. The full spread: white cheese, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, honey with kaymak (clotted cream), menemen (scrambled eggs with peppers), simit, unlimited çay.

    ~10:00 AM

Check out. Private transfer to Istanbul Airport (IST). Allow 60–90 minutes for the drive.

    1:20 PM

    Afternoon departure.

Istanbul Airport is massive and modern. Arrive at least 2.5–3 hours before international flights. The duty-free is excellent — last chance for Turkish delight, baklava, and Turkish coffee.

    Museum Pass Istanbul

Consider the Museum Pass Istanbul — it covers Topkapı Palace, Archaeology Museums, and several other attractions. Hagia Sophia requires a separate ticket. Check latest pricing and inclusions before your trip.

    Cash & Cards

Turkey uses the Turkish Lira (₺). Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants, but carry cash for bazaars, small shops, street food, and tips. ATMs are plentiful. Haggling is expected (and fun) in the Grand Bazaar.

    Dress Code for Mosques

Women need a headscarf and both genders need covered shoulders and knees for mosque visits (Blue Mosque, etc.). Carry a scarf in your daypack. Shoes are removed at the entrance.

    Download Apps

Google Maps works well in Turkey. Download offline maps for Cappadocia (spotty rural coverage). BiTaksi is Turkey’s Uber equivalent. Google Translate with Turkish offline pack is helpful for menus.

    Hammam Prep

Traditional Turkish baths are a highlight. Bring swimwear for family-friendly hammams. The experience involves a hot stone room, scrub (kese), and foam massage. Kids generally love it — it’s like a warm, bubbly adventure.
